Home cook, mostly Italian, learning Lebanese

@ruth · Leeds, England

OverviewInterestsTravelTimelineFamily

I learned to cook in my mother’s kitchen in Leeds, mostly by being in the way, and I have never really stopped.

These days it is Italian most nights and Lebanese when Nadia next door has time to correct me. I feed people. That is more or less the whole story.

A year of bricks, then one loaf that rose. Now I am insufferable about it.

Why Bio exists

Everyone has a life worth reading about.

Notable people get an encyclopedia entry. Everyone else is spread across apps that were built for something else. There’s nowhere to write down who you actually are. Bio is that place, so the people who want to know you actually can.

Looking someone up today

Social feeds
Whatever someone posted lately, mixed in with whatever the algorithm wants you to see.
Photo apps
What someone did and where they went, but not much about who they are.
Work profiles
Where someone has worked, and very little else.
Bio
Who someone is, in their own words, with nothing in the way.

If you’re writing

Put your life on the record

  • Say who you are

Where you’re from, what you do, what you believe, in your own words rather than a job title.

  • Keep track of what you love

Log your interests, trips and milestones as they happen, so they add up to something.

  • Leave something lasting

A record of your life that the people close to you, now and later, can come back to.

If you’re reading

Get to know people properly

  • Learn about someone

Read about a new colleague, an old friend or a relative in their own words, before you meet or after.

  • Find people like you

Search by place or interest to find people you have something in common with.

  • See the whole person

Not just where someone worked, but what they care about and the people and places that shaped them.

What goes on a page

Everything about you, on one page.

Start with a short introduction, then add as much or as little as you like. Every section is optional.

  • An introduction in your own words

Introduce yourself however you like, then add sections for whatever matters to you. Work and education fit in too.

    Overview

What I would talk about for an hour without preparing

Kibbeh. Specifically, why my shell is still too thick after four goes, and why Nadia’s mother could make hers thin enough to read through, and whether the answer is the bulgur, the wetness of my hands, or forty years of doing it.

Also sourdough, but only since February, when one finally rose after a year of bricks.
